After ca 6 months working side by side on a weekly basis with these microphones Im sharing my thoughts about them. I use them both on basically all my video assignments. I got the Røde about one year ago, and been using it a lot more than the Sony. When the Sony mic got launched I waited long tim before ordering one since I wasn’t sure if it was worth it. The price is almost double from the Røde. But I really needed a mic that did not need charging or batteries. So I was looking at the ECM-B1M and the Sony XLR-K3M which is even more expensive but also gives you a lot more for the money. It took me about 6 months to decide which to go for. Depending on what the A7s iii will be like (if Ill upgrade to it or not), I might be buying the XLR-K3M also.
My favorite one for video work for clients is the Sony ECM-B1M. Since I dont have to think about charging, I can just pick it up and Im good to go. The Røde is better for vlogging since it can be mounted on the side of a6400, and you can flip up the screen without the mic being in the way. In sound quality they are quite similar, the Sony is a bit higher in record volume than the Røde. But ones you bump up the rec volume on the Røde they sound almost the same. I would say the Røde has more bass but the Sony has tiny bit more clarity.
