The search for the best vlogging setup is a hot topic in the internet these days. In this post Im talking about one sollution which could be one to go for.

For vlogging im prioritizing ease of use, portability, convenience and quality. I would love to have a full frame option from Sony, but the have not yet released any fullframe mirrorless camera with a flip-up or flip out screen. I was vloggin a lot on the RX100 iv. But it not having a mic input really made it worthless for talking clips. Now they have launched the RX100 VII which has mic input, but I have not tested it yet.

When the a6400 arrived I bought it quite immediately, at the time I was on the look for a B-cam to couple with my A7r iii for stills and video work and vlogging. And it was the perfect choice.
Now that the camera was set, the next issue was where to connect the mic. A normal shotgun mic would have gotten in the way of the screen when flipping it, so that was not an option. and Smallrigg hadnt yet announced their relocating mount for the coldshoe at that time. So I started looking at mini mics and lav mics. I found the Saramonic SR-XM1 and the Boya BY-MI mics and bought both. None of them was perfect but one was clearly better. You can se my comparison of the microphones in this video:

Saramonic vs BOYA mic

The BOYA mic has been used in many interviews since and it has a very good quality into it. The long cable makes it easy to reach where you need. Only downside is that it uses batteries.
The Saramonic has not been used so much while still beeing the better one for run and gun vlogging setup. The reason for that is that Smallrig quite fast launched the relocating plate for the coldshoe, and with this one I was able to connect my Røde video mic pro plus on the side of the a6400 not covering up the screen while flipped up. Making it quite bulky but also making the sound so pleasingly good it was worth it. Smallrig has launched 3 different plates in very strategic time and order. Ive got all 3 and will easily recommend all 3 for different uses. Ill write an own post spesifically on them. UUrig has also made on recently and Ill include that in the post about Smallrig.
